Step 1
Volunteer at a Soup kitchen. - do an internet search of the soup kitchens in your area.
Soup kitchens often need people to pick up food donations, store them away, set up tables, prepare the food, serving the food and help with clean up after the meal. -
Step 2
Look up Friends of the Elderly(Little Brothers elderly program) in your area- do an internet search
These older people are in need of people to provide companionship especially during thanksgiving and christmas. Check out their volunteering opportunities. -
Step 3
There are also companies that package and deliver holiday meals to the elderly, either in their homes or assisted living and nursing facilities.-
-
Step 4
Call up local churches in the area and inquire about their plans for thanskgiving and ask if they need any assistance.
They often put together thanksgiving baskets for needy families or prepare meals for those who have nowhere to go. -
Step 5
Volunteer at your local foodbank. They are always in need of lots of help.
-
Step 6
Some Local Colleges and Universities provide thanksgiving meal for single and married students who would not be able to spend it with their families and relatives. Look into something like this. They may need cooks, servers, and people to help cleanup.

on 11/24/2008 Great suggestions. I never thought about the college students volunteer idea. I know some students can't afford to go home, so this seems like a terrific thing to do. Good article.
