How to Write an Impressive Biographical Sketch

How to Write an Impressive Biographical Sketch thumbnail
Compose a biographical sketch of yourself.

A biographical sketch, sometimes referred to as a professional profile, is a brief narrative that presents you in the best possible light to prospective employers, clients and the general public. It is a useful tool whether you are reentering the job market or addressing audiences as an expert in your field. The biographical sketch summarizes who you are, what matters most to you, and how you add value to the people and organizations with which you interact. Learn how to compose a biographical sketch that stands out from the rest.

Instructions

    • 1

Be creative. A canned biographical sketch is a red flag to the trained eye of a prospective employer. It announces that you are unwilling to take the time to compose an original document, and that does not speak highly of your work ethic. Instead of relying on a template, take advantage of the opportunity to write from your heart about your personal experiences, ideals and passions. You might tell a story that emphasizes your qualifications for the position you seek or reflects your accomplishments in the field. You could choose a favorite quote and explain how it inspires your career goals.

    • 2

Try to keep your biographical sketch to one page and do not attempt to include everything from your resume. Highlight the points that you consider most significant or impressive, including mentioning schools you've attended--but not grade point averages--and positions that you have held, but not specific duties.

    • 3

Toot your own horn. The point of a biographical sketch is to put your best foot forward, so don't be afraid to sing your own praises. Don't embellish the truth, but let the reader know why you'd be an asset. Mention any special awards or recognitions you've received, publications featuring your work, involvement with civic and professional organizations, and events where you were featured as a keynote speaker or expert presenter.

    • 4

Write in the third person to convey an objective quality. Imagine that you are a reporter writing about someone you respect. Be descriptive, and integrate direct quotations from yourself to add personality.

    • 5

Maintain a current professional portfolio that includes a resume, biographical sketch and copies of your published literature. You never know when an opportunity for career growth might present itself, so it's best to have your "promotional literature" ready for distribution. Keep your ideal reader in mind, and make sure that you present yourself accordingly. Ask yourself: "Is this an accurate, interesting depiction of me? Would I be interested in working with this person?"
