Things You'll Need:

- Food

Step 1
Create a flier announcing the trunk or treat block party. Use Microsoft Word and clipart to create a flier that lists the time and place of the party. Set up a time for doing the “trunk or treating” and a time for socializing and food afterward. Pass out the fliers a month in advance and find out who is interested in participating. Send out reminder fliers a couple of days before the trunk or treat block party.
-
Step 2
Purchase cones or road signs to block off the road. If your street is a thoroughfare, you may not be able to. If it is a side street, it will probably be OK to block it off for a couple of hours. Make sure you have orange safety cones and road signs announcing the closing of the road, for added safety.
-
Step 3
Purchase or borrow long tables to hold the food you will be eating after the trunk or treating event. If you are able to close the road, you can put the table in the road. If not, you may have to put the table on one of the neighbors’ lawns.
-
Step 4
Make food assignments. Since this is a neighborhood block party, it should be a potluck event. Assign different people to bring salads, breads, drinks and other foods that fit with your theme. You may decide you don’t want to do a full-dinner event, but would rather have appetizers and drinks after the trunk or treating event. Include in the assignments paper products like plates, utensils, napkins and cups.
-
Step 5
Make sure everyone understands what trunk or treating is. At a trunk or treat party, each person stands in or at their vehicle and hands out candy. Instead of going from door to door, the kids go from trunk to trunk collecting their Halloween treats. It is up to the person if he wants to decorate the trunk of his car. Some people decorate their trunks with spider webs, jack-o-lanterns, spooky music, motion-activated hands or other Halloween decorations. The person handing out the candy can dress up in costume if she wants to.
-
Step 6
Serve food after trunk or treating. After the trunk or treating is over, gather the families around the food tables. Set up the food buffet-style so each person can serve his or her own dish. Neighbors can sit or stand while snacking on the food and socializing. Try to set a time for the event to end. If neighbors want to stay out and socialize, they’re welcome to. With an end time, nobody will feel pressured to stay out all night.
