Things You'll Need:
- Paper clip
- Timing light
- Wrenches
-
Step 1
Start the engine and let it reach normal operating temperature. Locate the blue plastic service check connector, located behind the passenger side kick plate. Bend a paperclip into a "U" and insert the paperclip into the service check connector.
-
Step 2
Turn off any accessories such as the radio, climate control and lights. Shut off the engine and locate the crankshaft pulley at the front of the engine. Wipe off any dirt or oil to expose the timing marks.
-
Step 3
Connect the timing light to the battery and then to the number one ignition wire at the driver's side front of the engine. Start the Honda CR-V engine and let it idle for 2 minutes.
-
Step 4
Point the timing light at the crankshaft pulley and determine the amount of adjustment needed. Loosen the distributor hold down bolts and rotate the distributor slowly until the crankshaft timing mark matches the middle line of the timing light.
-
Step 5
Tighten the distributor hold down bolts and recheck the timing. Turn off the engine and remove the timing light. Replace the number one ignition wire if necessary.
