How to Add Feedburner to a Blog
People love the simplicity of blogs, from posting new material to reading them anywhere, including on cell phones. But sometimes, your blog’s feed isn’t attractive and makes reading your feed very difficult. That’s where FeedBurner comes in. FeedBurner enhances your feed’s distribution by making your feed easier on the eyes--which in turn makes it easier to read. In fact, thanks to FeedBurner’s technology, your feed will read as beautifully as the page you set up on your blog!

Sign up for a free account.Visit FeedBurner’s homepage and click on the “Register” link at the upper right corner of the page. You’ll be taken to a new page. On this page you will be asked to provide several bits of information: user name, password, email address, secret question and secret answer. Your user name should coincide with your blog’s name. If, however, you have several blogs, choose your first and last name. Provide a password that is easy to use, but not the same password as your blog. Use the same email address you use for signing into your blog because it will make it easier to remember for FeedBurner. And use a question that provides an answer you can easily remember.

Activate your account.You’ll be given notification via your email account. Follow the instructions to activate your account.

Grab your RSS feed.Every blog comes with an RSS feed link. You’ll need to go to your blog and grab the link. A Blogger feed will look like this: title.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

Sign into FeedBurner.After signing in, you should see: "Burn a feed right this instant" and under this statement should be a blank box. Insert your blog’s RSS feed in the box and click "Next."You should be asked to give your feed a title. Title your feed and you’ve just created your first FeedBurner feed.

Edit feed details.This is where you give your FeedBurner feed a unique name. It’s important to give it a name that coincides with the name or theme of your blog. It should look something like this: feeds.feedburner.com/title

Optimize your FeedBurner feed.Everything within FeedBurner’s control panel is pretty self-explanatory. You’ll want to go through each area carefully and turn on or off the things you feel will enhance your blog readers’ experiences. For instance, if you click on the title of your feed, you will be taken to a screen with five optimization tabs. Each tab gives you a set of links to click on--all designed to help you efficiently set up your account. While you can pick and choose which tabs you use, make sure that you set up the "Title/Description" tab as this tells potential blog readers what your blog is about. You’ll also want to activate the "Browser Friendly" feature as this allows readers to pick and choose how they receive and read your blog’s feed.

Publicize your feed.This tab is essential in helping you get your feed ready for your blog. While your blog may come with a ping service in place, you’ll want to activate Ping Shot, via FeedBurner’s control panel. You’ll also want to activate Email Subscriptions as many readers have begun to enjoy the simplicity of having a blog’s feed come right to their inboxes. Within the subscription area, you can also pick when your email will be delivered each day.

Add your feed to your blog.Now comes the easy part. Each FeedBurner feed comes with its own javascript and RSS feed link, making it easy to cut and paste the feed into your blog account. All you have to do now is log in to your blog, decide where you want the feed to go and paste the feed in that spot. You can paste it in the sidebar, at the bottom of each page or on a static page all by itself.In Blogger, adding the feed is extremely easy. Just log in to your Blogger account, click on layout, click on “Add a gadget,” then click on the plus sign next to “Feed”. A screen will pop up asking you for the address of your feed. Just insert your feed’s URL (feeds.feedburner.com/title) and click on the “Continue” button. It’s that simple. And if you’re using the javascript for the email form instead of the RSS feed, just click on the plus sign for “HTML/Javascript” when the gadget screen pops up. Insert the javascript you copied from FeedBurner and click on the “Continue” button.
