1
Pick an ideal location for your box maze. An empty garage is a great choice, because visitors will not be intruding on your house and the weather will not destroy your boxes.
-
2
Get all of your boxes together and draw a sketch of how you would like the box maze to be constructed. Try not to make it too complicated, with only two or three paths (and all of them offering an exit).
-
-
3
Poke small holes in the top of every third box. This will allow light and air in; even though you want your maze to be dark and creepy, a little light is necessary for safety reasons.
-
4
Paint the insides of the boxes with glow-in-the-dark paint to help guide visitors. Create arrows and phrases you would like on the walls of your maze.
-
5
Set up the boxes and connect them using duct tape. Cut the sides of a couple of the boxes so they can flap open to form emergency exits. Clearly label these exits.
-
6
Scatter fake bugs throughout the boxes for people encounter and crawl over.
-
7
Cut hand-sized holes in some of the boxes and use them to provide access for scary hand puppets, bats and other Halloween props. Set up a couple of mirrors in the boxes to confuse travelers.
-
8
Place someone outside of a box to randomly shake it when visitors walk through. Set up speakers around the entire haunted maze to add an eerie effect via the playing of Halloween-themed music.
-
9
Test the maze by going through it in all directions and making sure everything is secure. Notice where the big scares are, and add more as needed.
-
10
Open the haunted maze and let guests walk through it. Survey them at the end to see what worked best and what you need to change.
