A bird-feeding Christmas tree is a lovely way to decorate and dress up your home for the holidays. The wonderful aspect of this tree is that it attracts birds and other wildlife into your yard. The entire family can be enlisted to help, creating an unforgettable tradition. In times past, people decorated bird-feeding Christmas trees for prosperity and good luck. Once the tree is finished, you'll discover that the birds themselves make lovely decorations when they visit. If you don't have an ample tree in the yard, a large potted tree will work.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Popcorn
  • Cranberries
  • Blueberries
  • String
  • Small containers
  • Bird seed
  • Bird suet
  • Peanut butter
  • Christmas decorations
  • Fresh vegetables
  1. Step 1

Choose the tree. An large tree in the yard is ideal; one that is big enough to hold decorations and lights, but small enough that you can manage. Make sure the tree is not too close to the house, or animals will be afraid to visit. If you are using a potted tree, put it in the yard where birds and other wildlife will have easy access.

  2. Step 2

Make strands. String popcorn, blueberries and cranberries, either alone or together, making edible garlands.

  3. Step 3

Fill containers with food. Using scoops of peanut butter, fill small containers halfway to the top. Birds love to eat peanut butter and this is an important nutrient for them during the winter. Other containers can be filled with bird seed. You can use any kind of container you like. Make sure it can hold birds, because they will perch on the sides to eat. To successfully hang the container, pierce two holes on opposite sides and run strong thread or ribbon through. Tie a bow at the top as you attach it to the tree.

  4. Step 4

Make suet decorations. Take suet cakes, smear them with peanut butter and roll them in birdseed. Attach a colorful ribbon as a hanger.

  5. Step 5

Decorate the tree. Wrap the garlands around the tree first, and then choose where to hang the suet decorations. Now you can add other decorations, too. Use traditional Christmas decorations that are able to withstand the elements. Place the containers on the tree last, out on the end of the branches. This gives the birds easy access.

  6. Step 6

Add water containers and fresh vegetables. Other wildlife might be attracted to your tree, too. As the birds eat, food is dropped. If you have raccoons, possums, rabbits or squirrels, they will want to feast, as well. Fill containers with water and lay them under the tree along with fresh vegetables like apples, carrots and lettuce.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have your children replenish the food. It's a wonderful way to teach them responsibility and about caring for the environment.
  • Don't forget to water the tree if it is potted.
  • Hang the food containers low enough for children to reach.
