How to Tune up a 1995 Plymouth Neon
A tune-up on a 1995 Plymouth Neon could easily cost a couple hundred dollars. However, performing the tune-up yourself can save you a lot of money. The actual labor takes no longer than 1 hour. Tuning this model and year is especially less complicated because the sparks plugs are all on the top center of the motor. The steps below will show you how to perform the basic tune-up for a fraction of the cost.
Things You'll Need
- 3/4 inch long socket
- socket wrench with extension
- Phillip's head and flathead screwdriver
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
Instructions

1
Purchase a set (four) of pre-gapped Bosch Platinum Spark Plugs. Purchase standard Bosch spark plug wires also.
-
2
Park the vehicle on a level platform in a shaded area. Lift the hood, and allow the motor to cool.
-
-
3
Locate the four wires on the top center section of the motor. You will recognize them because they are identical to the ones you purchased. These wires run from the spark plugs that are in the motor to the distributor cap outside the motor.
-
4
Remove the wire to your far left, from the spark plug and the distributor cap. Place it to the side. To remove a wire, you should gently pull on it and it will pop off. Using your 3/4 inch socket wrench with the extension on it, remove the first plug completely. Insert the new plug, and tightened it snug. Do not fully tightened it or it will result in a rough idle.
-
5
Size up the old spark plug wire with a new one. Simply lay all the new wires down, and find the one that is the same size as the old one you removed. Place the new wire onto the new plug and distributor cap. To put the wire back on, you should press it right on to the plug until you feel a subtle click.
-
6
Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to replace the remaining three wires and plugs.

Tips & Warnings
If the plug is being stubborn and won't loosen easily, spray a little WD-40 around it and it should loosen.
Never remove more than one wire at a time to avoid crossing the wires. Crossing the wires will result in your car not accelerating.
