How to Build a Wooden Cheese Board. Cheese boards make it easy to serve appetizers to your dinner and party guests, and they can enhance the appearance of your table. You can make your own cheese board from a variety of durable woods. Olive, oak, bamboo and maple are excellent choices.
Things You'll Need
- 20 inch by 24 inch wooden board
- Router with 3/8-inch bit
- Damp cloth
- Polypropylene finish
- Olive oil or mineral oil, optional
Use a pencil to mark curves on the corners of the wooden board, using a cup or other curved object as a template. Saw along the outline of the pencil marks. Round off the edges with a router fitted with a 3/8-inch bit.
Sand the cheese board with 60-grit sandpaper. Sand again with 80-grit sandpaper, then 120-grit. Finish with 220-grit until the wood is extremely smooth.
Wipe with a damp cloth to remove any sawdust.
Finish your cheese board by brushing on polypropylene or polyethylene resin to give your board a glossy finish. Allow the finish to dry for at least 48 hours before using.
Tips & Warnings
- You can also use olive oil or mineral oil to finish your cheese board. Rub two coats into the wood and let it sit. Wash and apply more olive oil after each use.
