How to Make Last Minute Lightning Fast Garlic Bread

There are many reasons why you might need garlic bread in a big hurry. Maybe you discovered that the salad lettuce you thought was okay had decomposed into a green mass in the back of the vegetable bin. Maybe there wasn't any to begin with and you swore you bought some. Maybe your wonderful entree took an hour longer than you thought it would leaving you no time for side dishes. Whatever the reason, you need something to go with dinner. Something impressive and delicious. And fast.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bread. Sourdough or other specialty white bread works best. Unless your family oddly prefers wheat garlic bread.
  • Brush
  • Butter or margarine
  • Garlic powder
  • Cookie sheet
  • Usual kitchen dishes and utensils
  1. Step 1

    Preheat the broiler to High.

  2. Step 2

If you are using a loaf, slice in medium slices. If not, set the sliced bread in rows on a cookie sheet depending on how much garlic bread you want to make. I usually fill the sheet.

  3. Step 3

If you're using margarine, spread it on the bread. For butter, put 2-3 tablespoons in the microwave and melt. Then brush it on the bread. This way it takes you about a minute to butter and you get better coverage. You can also soften and spread, if you don't have a brush.

  4. Step 4

Shake the garlic powder over the bread. It's not quite as simple as it sounds. You don't want too little, or too much. I've found that the best way is to hold the jar of garlic powder horizontally, slightly tipped down. Then give it 2-3 firm shakes as you move over your bread.

  5. Step 5

Put the prepared bread in the broiler, and set the time for 1 minute. Check it when the timer goes off. When done, the bread should be brown around the edges and look amazing. If it is, take it out. If not, add one more minute.

  6. Step 6

Once the bread is done, use a spatula to loosen some of the pieces that may have stuck. (You can grease the baking sheet of course, but in this case, I don't think it's worth the bother. It's only the edges of some pieces that stick.) Serve. My favorite way to serve is in a basket lined with a napkin. It will be gone before you know it!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have those packages of grated cheese on hand (especially one where there's not very much and/or needs to be used), throw it on. Then in the broiler, you'll also be looking for the cheese to melt; though if it is a hard cheese or just a small amount, it may crisp instead. That's fine. Other variations are to add some dried herbs for garlic herb bread.
  • The bread will burn VERY easily. Make sure you set a timer for one minute, and don't bury yourself in something that you can't walk away from immediately. I would not exceed three minutes unless you have a very inefficient broiler.
