How to Teach Check Writing
Even though credit and debit cards are becoming the normal way to pay for things, we still use checks on a regular basis. Teaching children to write checks is important, because this is a skill they will use well into their adult years. It’s also quite fun for them, and helps them feel like a “grown up.” Using a little bit of creativity, teaching check writing can be a lot of fun for all involved!
Things You'll Need
- Copies of replica checks
- Store items for children to buy
- Overhead of replica check
- Overhead projector
- Screen or blank wall
Instructions

1
Start by introducing the check. Show children an overhead projector picture of a replica check. Show them how to fill in each part.
-
2
Give children their own replica checks to practice writing on. Teach them where to put each piece of information. Monitor their work to make sure they understand where the information needs to go.
-
-
3
Make the design of the replica checks fun so the kids will be motivated to use them.
-
4
Create a store where children can "buy" items like small toys, color books, or candy. Price these items high with both dollars and cents in the prices so that they can practice writing checks with dollars and cents.

Consider using the store as part of your classroom rewards system. When children behave well, they can purchase a couple of items from the store, but they must do so by writing a check for those items. This will provide motivation to learn how to properly write out the check, as well as motivation to behave well in school.

Tips & Warnings
Keep the check-writing process fun. This is one area of math class that should be fun and engaging for all students, even those who typically struggle in math.
Always teach children that real checks cost money and should not be used as toys.
