Whether it's for home or business, setting up a filing system doesn't have to be difficult. Read on for a complete set of steps that you can follow to set up a filing system in no time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • File folders
  • File folder labels
  1. Step 1

Begin by gathering any files you currently have along with any papers that need to be filed.

  2. Step 2

Group the papers and files in step one into categories that make sense to you. You can do this by sorting them into piles (if you have lots of room to spread out) or into the files themselves (if you are short on room).

  3. Step 3

If a file becomes too full or a pile too high, consider breaking that category down into smaller categories.

  4. Step 4

Once your sorting is complete, label the file folders and file them alphabetically into a file drawer or box.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider using straight-line filing, where all the file tabs are lined up in one position. It is easier for the eye to scan in a straight line and files added later don't interrupt the "system".
