How to Create a Tag Line for a Business

Creating a tagline for your business is an important part of developing your business brand. Your brand is a valuable marketing tool that helps set your business apart from the always-increasing competition. In that way, creating a great tagline can be just as important for your business as choosing the right name for your company.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of all of the things you’re good at (your skills). Hopefully, this will be a long list. If you can’t think of many skills, ask friends and family members what they think your skills are.

    • 2

Make a second list of words that describe you. These are usually different than your skills. For example, you might describe yourself as dependable, committed or honest, whereas your skills might be writing, working with computers or comedy.

    • 3

Make a third list of things that you love and value. For example, I value quality, family and being on time or I love dancing, writing and working in the yard. These are just examples, your list should be a mix of personal and professional values and interests.

    • 4

Look over each of your lists and take two or three words that best describe you off of each one. Use those to create a description of yourself. For example: I am a talented lawyer, dependable, committed, honest with a strong aptitude for writing, working with computers and making people laugh. I value quality, my family and being on time. In my personal life, I love dancing, writing and working in the yard.

    • 5

Look over your lists again and choose two or three professional attributes. Write another description that fits your business. For example, if your list contains professional writer, corporate attorney and quality, your description could be: I am a corporate attorney offering high quality writing services.

    • 6

Take the two descriptions and narrow them down to a tagline that combines some sense of your values and the business benefit that you offer. For example, the tagline: “Quality Writing On Time,” would be a combination of a writing skill or business with the personal value and business benefit of being on time. Keep trying different combinations of what you do, your skills and your values.

Test a couple of taglines by asking family members, good friends or business advisers to choose their favorite. In the end, the right tagline for your business will describe what sets you apart from the competition in just a few memorable words.
