Check out today's sofa beds, and you'll find a whole new ball game. The bar that used to jut into your back now is buried an inch or two beneath a layer of polypropylene. The mattresses have become more comfortable, too. You can still find foam, but many sofa beds now feature inner-spring mattresses that hold up much better. Some even have an air pad on top that you can pump up to the level you like.

If you don't have room for a full sofa bed, try a chair and a half. It's a little smaller than a love seat but big enough for two people to sit comfortably. It opens to form a twin bed, with workings as comfortable as those of a sofa bed. The only thing it doesn't have is the air pad on top.
