Step 1
Know what dates you want to travel and from what airports you will be traveling. Every online flight website has one thing in common: they need to know when and where you will be traveling. If this isn’t set in concrete yet, you should hold off buying tickets until it is, because changing flights can often be difficult.

Step 2
Visit the HotWire website or another site that specialize in combing through all the airlines and all the available flights for the dates and destinations you are searching for. These websites attempt to make picking flights easy by comparing all possible flights and letting you choose which one is best for you.

Step 3
Purchase your plane tickets online shortly after the airlines load their latest fares. When you purchase your plane tickets after the distribution of seats on the planes, you have a better chance at getting a lower deal. The distributors offer different plane tickets for different prices on the same flight in order to attract low-price-seeking customers. Get these lower prices by visiting HotWire or Expedia shortly after 10am, 12:30pm or 8pm on weekdays to find these lower rates.

Step 4
Determine when the best times were to buy flights a year ago. Historically airlines publish their best airfare prices on the same days each year. These do change from time to time. But purchasing the plane tickets on the same time when the good deals were released the previous year is a good bet for a low price.

Step 5
Sign up for alerts of when airfare changes drastically on Fare Compare or a similar website. You can enter the cities you are traveling to and from and receive email alerts when the airfare changes.
