How to Troubleshoot Flash Player Installation

Flash Security Update KB923789 in Windows Update

When installing the Adobe Flash Player, many people found that the Flash Security Update KB923789 in Windows Update would not install normally. When trying to install the Flash Security Update, users would receive an error saying “You must install a later version of the Macromedia Flash Player.” Yet another security update was released in April 2008, but this one has issues, too. Fixing these problems will typically require that you uninstall and then reinstall the flash player to make it work properly. However, simply uninstalling and reinstall Adobe Flash Player using the Add/Remove Programs utility from the Control Panel will not solve the problem. If you version of Adobe Flash Player is corrupted, the application may not uninstall properly and that will cause any new installations to not work correctly.

Download and Run the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller

Step 1

Download the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller. (See Resources) Make sure you download the uninstaller to your desktop for easy access later.
Step 2

Double click on the Uninstaller's icon to launch the application. This will initiate a wizard that will begin to uninstall Adobe Flash Player for you.
Step 3

After the Uninstaller is done, restart your computer to complete the process. After your computer reboots, Adobe Flash Player should be completely uninstalled.

Download and Install the Flash Player

Step 1

Download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player from Adobe’s website. (See Resources below for the most recent version).
Step 2

Change your security Level if Internet Explorer won't let you properly Adobe Flash Player.
Step 3

Open Internet Explorer and then click on TOOLS in the menu at the top of the window. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS in the Tools dialogue box. Click the SECURITY tab and then click CUSTOM LEVEL.
Step 4

Locate the section named "ActiveX controls and plug-ins." Select PROMPT under the option named "Download Signed ActiveX Controls." Select PROMPT for "Run ActiveX Controls and Plugins." After you have done this, click "OK" twice to exit.
