1
Sit the first few songs out by asking your date to get you some punch. Drink, talk with friends and show off your gorgeous look. Most importantly, you want to use this time to casually observe how others are dancing. Every prom is unique, and your prom will likely have its own standard of dancing. You don't want to go on the dance floor and start doing an old-fashioned dance if everybody else is doing modern dancing.

2
Confess any insecurities to your partner in a joking way. It is likely that your dancing partner is every bit as nervous as you are, and it's important to not make him feel pressured along with you. Yet, you can turn your worries into a joke, and ask your partner to lead. He will increase his confidence as he eases your nerves on the dance floor. This can lead to both of you having a magnificent time.

3
Ask to lead when a slow song comes on. This is your cue for a classic prom dance. Start by feeling the beats of the music, and start to sway with your hips and feet.
-
4
Pull your partner in close. It should almost be like a hug. How close you will hug your partner depends on your comfort level with him. If it is a friendship date, keep the hug loose.
-
5
Make sure he has his arms as tightly around you as your arms sit around him.
