How to Do Padmasana

Padmasana, or lotus pose, is a classic yoga pose. It is so well known that it is familiar even to people with little to no knowledge of yoga. The lotus position is a signifier of yoga, zen, and meditation.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  • Comfortable clothing
  1. Step 1

    Sit on the floor or on a mat.

  2. Step 2

    Bend your left knee as if you were sitting in a regular cross legged position.

  3. Step 3

    Bring your lower right leg to your upper left leg.

  4. Step 4

    Leaning back slightly, lift your lower left leg over your right shin. Rest your lower left leg on your upper right leg. You may need to reposition your lower legs slightly with your hands.

  5. Step 5

    Hold for several breaths.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat on the other side.

Tips & Warnings
  • The pose requires flexibility in the legs and hips. Do some gentle stretching in your legs before attempting Padmasana.
  • Do not eat for two hours before practicing yoga.
