How to Shell Shrimp

It's easier to eat shrimp that have been shelled prior to cooking, but the shells do add flavor to the dish. You might also want to leave shells on if you're grilling the shrimp, to better protect the meat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Shrimp

Step1
Remove shrimp legs.
Step2
Use your fingers to pull off the shell, leaving the tail attached to the meat.

Tips & Warnings

  • The "vein" that runs along the back of the shrimp is actually its digestive tract. You don't need to take the vein out, but many people think the shrimp looks better (and, some say, tastes better) when deveined. (See the Related eHows for instructions on deveining.)

on 1/23/2006 Grab the shrimp by the legs and pull around the body in a rolling action (lengthwise). This will remove the entire shell (except for the tail) in one motion.
