Step 1
Cut or sand away the burned ends of the carpet fibers. Cut fibers will simply blend in if they're only slightly shorter than the surrounding carpet.
-
Step 2
Cut some carpet fibers from an inconspicuous portion of carpet elsewhere in the room or from a matching carpet remnant and attach them to the cut fibers using household glue, if the remaining fibers are noticeably shorter than the surrounding carpet.

on 1/20/2009 If the burns are small, I paint them. I have also removed some of the edges in closets to get the material to fix the bigger burns.

on 3/10/2008 I have done this repair hundreds of times (once 20 in one home). On pile carpet I cut out the burnt fibers down to the base of their backing using a scraping motion with a razor blade knife and being carefull not to cut thru the backing. Then I take a spare piece of carpet and delaminate it's backing (pull the burlap off thinning the piece to be less noticeable) this should leave fibers stuck together with latex only. Trim to an exact fit. Then hot melt glue gun them to the cleaned out repair area, they will not stick and would be raised if any carpet fiber is left on the backing in the repair area, and if you use to much glue it will bubble up permenetly damaging the repair so practice first. Hot melt glue will not come off. Trim the tops with a sizzors to match surrounding area if done right it will not come out and is unnoticeable.

on 4/24/2007 If you cut the area into a circle it will not be as prone to come up as a square patch will.

on 12/27/2007 If the carpet is made of a plastic material, then the burns will form little charred blobs. My tip is to cut or sand the burned areas. Then cut a piece of carpet from a corner. Remove a strand of the carpet fiber. Then, using a lighter, burn the end of the carpet and attach it immediately to the burned patch on the carpet. Continue with this process using scissors to match the length of the carpet.
