Step1
Begin offering food to pups at 3 weeks of age. Over the weeks, change their diet slowly.
Step2
Choose high-quality puppy food that has 25 to 30 percent protein content.
Step3
Purchase dog food that mentions both AAFCO (Association of American Feeding Control Officials) and Animal Feeding Trials (or Animal Feeding Tests) on its label.
Step4
Make it into gruel with warm water or commercially prepared milk replacer.
Step5
Feed puppies three to four times a day until they're 5 to 6 months of age.
Step6
Check with your veterinarian to find out the correct amount of food to give your puppy at each feeding. Or check the package of puppy food, which may provide guidelines based on size. Avoid overfeeding.
Step7
Use puppy food specifically made for large breeds to encourage slow growth for large-breed puppies. Feed them puppy food for up to 12 to 18 months, depending on the breed.

Step9

on 2/25/2008 Dogs eat what you put in front of them, and if you really love your pet, and you take the time to read or write comments then take the time to literally investigate what your loved one is eating. Dry, wet and "treats" are killing our dogs and cats, and the scum bags that put information on the labels are liars out for a buck and capitalizing on feelings that you have for your pet! If you love your pet, then love him or her enough to find out what your feeding them and then when you know the facts about what is really in the food you think is good, then recommend it to everyone you know. I love my puppy, in fact, I love my puppy so much that I decided to find out what exactly it is that he is eating in kibble, and now that I know, my puppy will never eat any commercial dog food again. My puppy ate "dog food" for a total of 6 weeks of his entire little life and that was the end of that gig

on 10/30/2007 HELP: I just adopted a puppy. I think she is a lab mix. She refuses to eat anything. I tried giving her wet food, dry food, even treats. She is thin and I worried about her. I have an appointment to see the vet in three days. Any ideas for now?

on 2/19/2007 I have a question on feeding puppies. If you only feed them 1 to 2 times a day do you pick it up after a certain amount of time if they don't eat it all? I would think so, but how long do you give them?

on 12/23/2006 Feeding Pugs: If you feed your pug twice a day after 6-months, they should only be given 1/2 cup at each feeding. Pugs have a tendenancy to get fat! Watch their back wrinkles, if they have more than 2, put them on a diet!

on 6/30/2006 What I do is take the dry puppy food, put it in a blender (dry), blend until it is the consistency of corn meal.
I make up a lot at a time. I put it in an airtight container. This saves a lot of time waiting for the puppy food to soften. When ready to feed puppies, I mix this with warm water to a gruel, or you can use milk replacer with added water, and feed them. When puppies are through, give the leftovers to the Mama dog. They do really well on this.
