One of the newest and most useful social media tools is Twitter. It allows you to send updates to your "followers" via your cell phone, a Twitter API application like Twhirl, or even the Twitter web interface. It is especially easy and efficient to use the Twitter web interface to send updates, replies and direct messages.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Create a Twitter account from the Twitter homepage. Use the "Find & Follow" link at the top of the page to locate any of your friends, family or colleagues that already use Twitter.

  2. Step 2

Enter an update of 140 characters or less in the "Update" box. This will broadcast your message, also known as a "tweet," to everyone who follows you. It will also appear on the public timeline.

  3. Step 3

Follow other Twitter users by navigating to their Twitter homepage. You can type their Twitter page URL in directly, or you can click on their Twitter username from the public timeline.

  4. Step 4

Adjust your Twitter account, notification, picture and password settings by clicking "Settings" on your Twitter home page.

  5. Step 5

Reply to someone else's tweet using the format, "@ USERNAME MESSAGE." This sends your reply to that user, her followers and your followers. Even if you aren't following someone, you can receive replies in this way.

  6. Step 6

Type "d USERNAME MESSAGE" to send a direct message to another user. Direct messages go only to the recipient. No one else can see them.

  7. Step 7

Refresh your Twitter page frequently so you don't miss updates.
