Ever twisted your ankle and then hobbled around trying to find a towel to put some ice cubes in or had a muscle cramp and tried to figure out what you did with your heating pad or hot water bottle? Now you can make your own herbal hot/cold pack. Actually you can make two - keep one in the freezer and the other near your microwave - here's how!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cotton or flannel material - less than a yard will make several packs
  • Flax seed - from the local seed & feed store - amount will vary depending on how many packs and the sizes you are making - for one - start with about 1-2 pounds
  • Sewing machine or needle & thread
  • Scissors
  • Favorite essential oil - like peppermint, citrus, eucalyptus, lavender or other fragrance
  • Dried herbs (optional)
  • Funnel
  1. Step 1

Gather all your materials in a central location. Lay out the material and decide how large you want to make your hot/cold pack. Cut out a rectangular shape from the material twice as long as you want your pack and the same width - i.e. if you want a pack to use for bumps, bruises, sprains or strains; measure out 4.5 inches wide by 18 inches long.

  2. Step 2

Match right sides of the material and sew around the 3 open sides, leaving an opening about 1-2 inches long. Turn the pack right side out.

  3. Step 3

Mix together your flax seed, dried herbs and a few drops of essential oil. Using a funnel, fill the pack with your flax/herb mixture to within 1-2 inches of the top.

  4. Step 4

Sew the pack closed with needle and thread.

Tips & Warnings
  • To heat the pack, place in microwave and heat in 60 second intervals. The larger the pack, the longer it may take to heat.
  • To cool, place the pack in your freezer - do not get the pack wet.
