Want to save money on your electric bill with very little effort or money? Here's one way to do it!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

CFLs are not as expensive as they use to be or are still reported to be. I have found the best deals at Wal-Mart which sells them in 3 packs or more and they are a great deal! Many large chain hardware stores also sell them dirt cheap and often they can be given away free by your local electric company.

  2. Step 2

A compact fluorescent bulb or CFL, can save over $30 in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime compared to an incandescent lamp. And it saves 2000 times its own weight in greenhouse gases!

  3. Step 3

Watch your electric bill drop as you make the switch from regular candescant bulbs to CFLs. Try doing one room at a time or the entire house.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fluorescent bulbs don't dim yet as far as I know, but I know there will be some soon! Start buying lamps that already have CFLs in them, the old bulbs will become obsolete!
  • Like all fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain small amounts of powdered mercury, therefore when it's time to dispose of a CFL, treat it like other hazardous chemicals and take it to your local household hazardous waste center or call your local recycling center for more info.
  • I have yet to have one burn out on me!
