How to Make a Textured Painting

You like to paint. Now you're ready for something different. A textured "painting," using sawdust (as from a lumberyard), might be just the thing. Here's how it's done.

Things You'll Need

  • Bowls
  • Poster paint
  • Sawdust
  • Spoon
  • Cardboard
  • Paste
  • Set out several bowls, then fill them a quarter full of poster paint. Put a different color of paint in each bowl.

  • Fill the remaining three quarters of each bowls with sawdust.

  • Mix the sawdust and the poster paint with a spoon until the paint has thoroughly dyed the sawdust.

  • Using a light pencil, gently trace the areas of your painting on cardboard, identifying with border lines where you want different colors to go. For example, if your painting will feature the purple silhouette of a mountain range, draw the outline of that mountain range. Continue drawing until you've "mapped" out your entire painting.

  • Spread paste within the borders of one color area. Using the mountain range example above, you would spread paste only within the borders of that mountain range.

  • Generously sprinkle the appropriately-colored sawdust over the paste-covered area. Using the mountain range example above, you would sprinkle purple-dyed sawdust over the paste-filled mountain range area.

  • Repeat Step 5 and 6 with each new color, until your painting is complete. Allow it to dry completely before hanging it upright.

Tips & Warnings

  • For contrast, you might consider painting most of the picture regularly, then adding one section made from dyed sawdust.
  • Don't let the sawdust sit in the paint-filled bowls too long--or it will harden.
