Add a special touch to your crocheted items with beads. You can crochet the beads right into your work, which attaches them securely and saves the time it would take to sew them on. Try this technique first on a small item, such as adding beads to the next purse or hat you crochet.

From Quick Guide: Sewing with Beads
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Clear tape
  • Beads
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Select beads that complement your yarn. Make sure the holes in the beads are large enough to thread through your yarn.

  2. Step 2

Begin by threading the beads for your project on the skein of yarn. To make this easier, you can wrap a small piece of clear tape around the end of the yarn to prevent it from fraying. If you are making a large item, just string on enough beads for part of the project.

  3. Step 3

Crochet your foundation row and then begin your beaded pattern. To do a beaded stitch, insert the crochet hook into the back loop of the stitch, yarn over the hook and pull the yarn through to make two loops on your crochet hook.

  4. Step 4

Slide one of the threaded beads onto the yarn close to the two loops. Then, yarn over again with yarn from the other side of the bead and pull the yarn through both loops. The bead will be on the side of the item that faces away from you.

  5. Step 5

Continue crocheting, and when you get the next stitch where you want to add a bead, repeat step 4. You may want to add a bead approximately every 5 stitches or so. Space them evenly in every other row of your crocheted item.

  6. Step 6

Add more beads if you need to by cutting your yarn, leaving enough of an end to weave in. Then string on more beads and continue crocheting. Weave in all the ends to finish your project.
