Give Yourself an Oil Massage

A massage with oils can be done to yourself and can be a very relaxing end to a stressful day. Or, you can give yourself an oil massage to get your morning started right! Whatever you decide, giving yourself an oil massage can be fun and easy, as well as soothing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Massage oils
  • Plastic bottles
  • Container of hot water
  • Large towel or robe
  1. Step 1

Choose a massage oil that is right for you. A good rule of thumb is to find one that is cold-pressed or expeller-pressed. The reason behind this is that these two have less processing done to them and will last longer. Choose an oil that appeals to you in color, texture and scent. There are many different oils available on the market today, so it may be wise to talk to a professional at a body shop to pick the right kind for you. Choose from almond oil, coconut oil, emu oil, castor oil, olive oil and many more. Your oil massage will go so much better if you choose an oil that appeals to your senses.

  2. Step 2

Pick a time when you can relax with no interruptions. Make it even better by lighting some candles, burning incense, playing soft music, sipping wine, or adding whatever relaxes you to the process. Choose a place in your house where no one will bother you, hang out a do-not-disturb sign if need be, and take your time.

  3. Step 3

Start your oil massage by placing your oil either in a plastic bottle or, if the bottle is small enough, leaving it in it. Then, place that bottle into a large enough container of hot water that it is almost submerged. Let it sit for a few minutes to heat up. Be sure you do not make the water too hot, so you do not burn yourself.

  4. Step 4

Stand on a mat or sit on the edge of the bathtub. You may want to protect your carpet by laying down a towel and standing upon it. Start with a generous dollop of oil in the palms of your hands, and start rubbing the oil into your skin in a clockwise direction. You may start where you like, but many experts recommend starting at the solar plexus and working your way out. You can massage oil into your arms and legs using up and down strokes.

  5. Step 5

Enjoy the oils. Relax in a large robe or towel and feel the oils soothe your tired skin. When you feel relaxed enough, take a warm shower and use a light soap. Try to leave some oil on the skin as the feeling of being soft and smooth will stay with you for a long time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use oils that you enjoy smelling.
  • Do not make your water too hot as you could scald yourself.
