Make a Loopy Bow
Make a Loopy Bow

I have decided to make my young daughter’s hair-bows. It is loads of fun and the cost is minimal. I have researched making Loopy Bows. I tried it many different ways and then came up with my own variation. I like my way because by using wire instead of the more common use of using “thread” it holds everything together very tightly. I don’t have to worry about the thread breaking and the whole bow coming apart. Also the silver color of the wire matches the barrette so I do not have to cover it with ribbon. And, lastly, there is no hot glue gun to mess with.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 to 3 different colored ribbon spools similar in width size
  • French Clip (any size you want)
  • 24 gauge wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors
  • Lighter
  1. Step 1

Start by removing the metal clip from the inside of the barrette.

  2. Step 2

Place ribbon together right side up with the ends meeting. Leave the rest of the ribbon still on the spool. Do not cut it until the end.

  3. Step 3

Cut wire about 30 inches in length. Puncture one end of the ribbon with the wire. Pull all the way through and loop and bend the other end to keep it from going through ribbon.

  4. Step 4

Once wire is secured pull the wire through the small hole in one end of the french clip. Fold the ribbon over itself so that it not hanging over the edge of the clip. Wrap the wire around the edge of the ribbon.

  5. Step 5

Trim the edge of the ribbon and seal it using a lighter or a no-fray spray.

  6. Step 6

Form the loops of the bow by gathering the ribbon every six inches. Pinch the ribbon so that it does not overlap the french clip and then wrap it tightly with wire.

  7. Step 7

Continue to form loops every six inches of ribbon, wrapping it tightly and close together.

  8. Step 8

When you reach the end of the clip wrap the wire tightly around the end and then insert it through the hole in the clip. Loop and bend the wire to keep it securely together.

  9. Step 9

Trim the ribbon and seal the ends the lighter.

  10. Step 10

Re-attach the metal clip on the inside of the barrette.

  11. Step 11

Form the loopy bow by separating the loops and placing them in all different directions to give it a full look.

Tips & Warnings
  • When wrapping wire make sure to pull it tightly against the barrette. If it is not pressed tightly it might be hard to re-attach the metal clip on the inside.
  • Be very careful with your lighter. When sealing the ends of the ribbon make sure to pull the bow loops away from the flame with your other hand. I would hate to see scorch marks on a bow that you just worked so hard on!
