How to Make a Confetti Egg

Confetti Eggs can be a lot of fun

Confetti is very fun alone, but transforming that confetti into a confetti egg adds an entirely new dimension to the excitement. Confetti eggs make a great gag by busting it on their head. It can be humorous to see them think you busted an egg, only to realize they are covered with confetti. Confetti eggs are also great entertainment at birthday parties, on New Year’s Eve or during almost any festive celebration. Here is a quick and easy way to make your own confetti egg.

Instructions

  1. How to Get the Egg Out of the Shell

    • 1
Wash the egg before you begin.

Gently wash the outside of your egg. You will be placing your lips on the egg at a later stage, so you want to begin by washing the egg to make sure it is clean. While you are washing it, make a mental note of the top side and bottom side of the egg. The bottom is generally broader than the top, which tapers off.

    • 2
Using a knife, tap a small hole in the bottom of the egg.

Turn the egg upside down, and using your knife, tap a small hole in the bottom side of the egg. You must do this gently. Do not try to stab or cut a hole in the egg, but just keep gently tapping the bottom until the hole takes shape. Children can do this with a fork (tapping with just one prong of the fork) instead of a knife. Ideally, try to make your hole about half as big as the diameter of a pencil.

    • 3
Tap a small hole in the top of the egg.

Place your finger over the hole and turn the egg over so that you can tap a second hole in the top of the egg. It is OK to make the hole in the top slightly smaller than the one in the bottom of your egg.

    • 4
      Do not blow too hard.

Move to a location where it will be safe to blow the inside of the egg out. Some people prefer to blow it into the garbage, into the sink or outdoors. Just use whatever location works best for you. With your finger still over the hole in the bottom of the egg, place your mouth over the top half of the egg so that your lips for a firm (but gentle) seal around the egg. Be sure to lean over the top of the egg, so that the egg is held in a straight up and down position.

    • 5
      The shell remains in tact.

Remove your finger from the bottom of the egg and begin to blow into the egg. Do not blow too hard all at once or you may bust out the bottom of the egg. Start with a small amount of pressure and gradually increase it until the contents come out of the bottom of the egg. You should find that the entire egg will slide through the hole you made with no difficulty at all.

    • 6
Rinse the egg and let it dry.

Use a sink hose to run water through the inside of the egg to rinse out any remaining egg material. As tempting as it may be to add the confetti right away, you don’t want it to stick to the inside of the egg shell. So rinse the inside of the egg thoroughly and place the egg shell aside so that it can dry.

How to Put Confetti Inside an Egg

    • 7
Tape the hole in the top of the egg.

To get the confetti inside the egg, begin my placing a small piece of tape over one of the holes. It is generally better to tape the top hole, since it is smaller. Use a piece of tape that is barely big enough to cover the hole, so that it is not immediately obvious that there is tape on it.

    • 8
Put confetti in the egg through the bottom hole.

Turn the egg upside down and begin to put confetti into the other hole in the egg. The confetti will need to be small enough to fit through the hole. If you do not have confetti, you can make your own by cutting any paper, newspaper, construction paper or foil into pieces small enough to fit through the hole in your egg.

    • 9
      Tape the remaining hole.

Place a small piece of scotch tape over the remaining hole to seal the confetti inside. Again, use a piece of tape that is barely large enough to cover the hole, so that it is not easily obvious that the tape is there.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never throw a confetti egg at someone’s face. This can be very dangerous and could cause eye injury. If you must bust it on someone’s head, manually break it (do not throw) over the top or back of the person's head.
