How to Configure IIS 6 for Windows XP Pro x64

By installing IIS6 on Windows XP Pro x64, you are able to run a limited server for a home or a small business network. Thus, IIS6 is useful for development or training purposes and to experiment with various options and settings. To get started, you must have the CD or files on a hard drive that Windows XP Pro x64 will need to install IIS6.

Instructions

      Click on "Start" in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop screen, Control Panel and then the Add or Remove Programs link.

      Select the Add/Remove Windows Components button in the list on the left-hand side when the form opens.

      Look down the list of components on the Windows Components Wizard form to find the item labeled Internet Information Services (IIS) and check the check box next to it.

      Use the tab key to navigate to the Next button, then hit Enter key to start the wizard. When the wizard completes its task, move the mouse cursor over the Finish button on the form and click on it.

      Return to Control Panel and select the Administrative Tools link. Double-click the Internet Information Services icon.

      Select the name of the computer that is showing in the left side of the window and double-click on it. This will open a drop-down list of items.

      Right click the Default Website link that is now in the list. Proceed to move through the tabs and configure the options as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • IIS6 will not install on Windows XP Professional x32 edition. The 32-bit version is capable of running IIS5, however.
