How to Sew a Boutique Style Pillowcase Dress

Sometimes you have pillowcases in your closets, and the matching sheets are torn or stained. Other times you find cheap but pretty pillowcases in a discount store, but there are no sheets to go with them. If you don't want them to go to waste, you can turn those extra pillowcases into adorable little dresses. You can buy these dresses at an expensive boutique, but they will cost you a lot of money. Pillowcase dresses are so simple to sew that you will never waste your money at a boutique again.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your little girl with the measuring tape from her shoulder to the length you want the dress. Measure the pillowcase from the open end to the length you want the dress plus 1 inch. Cut straight across the pillowcase at that point. This cut edge will be the top of the dress.

    • 2

Fold the pillowcase lengthwise. Cut a "J" shape hole in the side opposite the fold, through all four layers, that measures 1 1/2 inches from the side and 3 inches from the top for a small girl or 2 inches from the side and 4 inches from the top for a larger girl.

    • 3

Unfold the pillowcase and turn it inside out. Fold the edges of each armhole in 1/4 inch with wrong sides together, then in again another 1/4 inch. Sew the folds in place with the sewing machine.

    • 4

Fold the top edge of the front and back of the pillowcase in 1/4 inch with wrong sides together, then over 3/4 inch. Sew the fold in place close to the bottom edge, making a casing for the ribbon.

    • 5

Cut the ribbon into two 36-inch pieces. Pin a safety pin to the end of one of the pieces of ribbon. Insert it into the front casing and push it through. Remove the safety pin. Repeat with the back casing.

    • 6

Tie each of the front ribbons to each of the back ribbons, forming the shoulder straps.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can tie knots in the ends of the ribbons or use liquid seam sealant to prevent the ribbon from fraying.

  • You can tie a 2-inch wide ribbon around the dress as a sash for more dressy occasions.
