Most people associate the sweet and spicy smell of gingerbread with winter holidays. But there's no reason why you can't enjoy that scent year round in the form of an exfoliating body scrub. You can purchase an expensive gingerbread body scrub at a department store beauty counter, but then you'd have no idea what chemicals or additives it contains. Try making your own, low cost, 100 percent natural scrub instead.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon freshly-grated ginger root
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Glass mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Plastic wrap
  • Small, air-tight glass or ceramic container
  1. Step 1

Pour all ingredients into a glass bowl.

  2. Step 2

Combine using a wooden spoon. Metal spoons might cause unusual fragrance reactions with the scrub's ingredients.

  3. Step 3

Place the scrub in the refrigerator overnight so that it becomes more firm. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap so that the scrub does not take on the smell of other food odors from the refrigerator.

  4. Step 4

Transfer the scrub from the bowl into the glass or ceramic container of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
  • To use the scrub, wet skin and scoop up a generous portion of the scrub. Massage in a circular motion. Leave the scrub on your skin for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
  • You can substitute almond, jojoba, safflower, grapeseed or almond oils for the olive oil in this recipe.
  • Try substituting kosher salt for the brown sugar in this recipe--either one serves as an excellent exfoliant.
  • This scrub has a shelf life of 1 to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
