Sometimes you need to save a file so that others can open it in different programs. Rich Text Format is a word processing format that can be opened in many different programs. Learn how to convert from RTF to Microsoft Word 2013 and from Word to RTF.
Converting From RTF to Word
In this example, an RTF document is written in Open Office. To convert the RTF file to a Word document, choose Save As from the File menu.
Choose the location where you want to save the file and then click the arrow in the Save as Type field and select Word Document.
There are several Word options for previous versions of Word. Choose Word Document to save in the latest Word version.
Click Save to complete the conversion to Word.
Converting From Word to RTF
In this example, a document is written in Word and needs to be converted to Rich Text Format. To convert the file from Word to RTF, choose Save As in the Word side ribbon menu. In the pop-up, click the arrow in the Save as Type field and select Rich Text Format.
You can change the location of the file before you save if you want to put it in a different folder.
Click Save to complete the conversion.
