How to Bypass School Internet Policy

School Internet policy is designed to protect the school from liability if students access certain types of information that are considered unsuitable. Bypass policy only after you have a thorough understanding of the policy itself, the intention or spirit and a good understanding of the Internet. Here are the steps to accomplish this task.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the current policy and note what exactly is banned, permissible and the punishments for each. Consider the spirit of the policy and think about what it is that you want to do.

    • 2

Determine if the purpose is to protect students from predators, viewing specific types of images or making online connections with people outside the school community. Choosing to bypass policy carries risks of punishment. Be sure that you understand the risks and determine if the action you have chosen is worth the risk.

    • 3

Set up a computer off campus with constant access to the Internet and install a virtual private network software. Leave this computer on and connected to the Internet. Write down the IP address and any user name and password required to access this computer.

    • 4

Log into a school computer and use the remote desktop function to connect to the computer located off campus by typing in the IP address and any user name and password. You can now perform any tasks normally blocked on school computers. The access is through a separate IP address so no record of the transactions will appear on any school computer and there are no restrictions on what images you can access.

Tips & Warnings

  • Close off the connection every time you are finished accessing the computer. Leaving this option open increases the risk of discovery. By creating this connection to bypass policy, you have a responsibility to ensure that younger students are still covered under the school Internet policy
