Children love to make crafts and art projects and the best part is they're not only having fun, they're also learning. Cutting, gluing and coloring teach children fine motor skills and attention to detail. Early introduction to arts and crafts lays the foundation for a real appreciation and possibly talent for art later on. You can find many inexpensive craft supplies and kits at your local arts and crafts store.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Construction paper
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Glue sticks
  • Safety scissors
  • Rubber stamps
  • Ink
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint
  • Individual plastic boxes
  • Plastic bags
  • Paint-by-number kits
  • Bead kits
  • Sun catcher kits
Step1
Visit your local arts and crafts store. Bring your child with you if you want him to help pick out new crafts to do at home. Go by yourself if you're picking out projects for groups, like Sunday School or Mom's Day Out, or if you want to pick out surprise crafts and projects for those rainy days at home.
Step2
Gather basic art supplies, such as construction paper, crayons, markers, glue sticks, safety scissors, rubber stamps, ink, paintbrushes, paint and pipe cleaners. Store these items in individual plastic storage boxes or plastic bags to keep them organized.
Step3
Consider purchasing other supplies, like eyes and string to help make paper people or foam letters, numbers or animals to glue onto construction paper. Holiday-related supplies, like for Easter or Christmas, can be great to have on hand as well.
Step4
Check out the pre-made craft section. Here you can find paint-by-number kits, bead kits and sun catcher kits. School-aged kids tend to enjoy these kinds of kits as they require a bit more skill and attention to detail than other projects. Some sun catcher kits require baking, so be sure to supervise the children as they make them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you visit the craft store, check out some websites for craft ideas. Make a list of all the items you need and take it with you.
  • Never leave children unattended while making art projects. Preschool-aged children can still be prone to putting craft supplies, such as small beads and glue, into their mouths.
