French braiding hair opens up endless possibilities for those with long hair. It takes some practice to learn to maneuver the hair into position and control the hair not being braided. Well worth the effort, French braids and their variations will help you remain stylish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by wetting the hair. It's much easier to control flyaways and determine how a French braid variation will look when you work with wet hair.

  2. Step 2

Make a three-strand braid by sectioning the hair into three areas and French braiding each section. When complete, braid the three French braids together.

  3. Step 3

Design a crown by sectioning off the hair behind each ear and French braiding only that section. The result will be a French braid that works as a hair band to keep the remaining hair back.

  4. Step 4

Section off two small portions of hair from the part to the ear and French braid each of them. Wrap these braids around the loose hair so that they cross at intervals. Secure the loose hair in a ponytail, and tie the two braided ends together underneath the loose hair.

  5. Step 5

Create cornrows by dividing hair into very small sections and French braiding each.

  6. Step 6

Embellish any French braid by adding ribbons to the sections of hair and then braiding the ribbon with the hair.
