Things You'll Need:
- Climbing equipment
- Harness
- Belay device
-
Step 1
Warm up and stretch your entire body. Do push-ups, take a jog or do jumping jacks. Raise your heart beat until you just begin to perspire slightly. After warming up, stretch your body well to avoid injury and sore muscles.
-
Step 2
Put on all safety equipment and hook into the climb rope. Wait for your belayer to tie in to the belay rope. Respond "on belay" when you hear the belayer say "belay on." Say "climbing" when you're ready to climb. Your belayer answers "climb on" to indicate that it's safe for you to begin.
-
Step 3
Approach the wall and study the route you'll take. Suggested routes are sometimes marked with color or tags and emphasize certain maneuvers and challenges.
-
Step 4
Place your hands on the first handholds and your feet on the first footholds. Look for the next two holds. Decide which arm or leg is required you'll need to grab both. Some maneuvers require you to twist and turn and cross your arms and legs across your body. Reach out to the next closest hold with the appropriate arm or leg. Push with your legs and pull with your arms.
-
Step 5
Continue moving up the wall in this fashion. Don't give up. When stuck, pause for a second, catch your breath and think through the dilemma. Your feet, fingers, arms and legs will feel tired but they won't give up if your mind doesn't.
