The magician's word for dialogue during a trick is known as "patter." Patter refers to the chosen words a magician will use to interact with his spectator. Patter should not be random or taken lightly--and this tutorial will stress how to effectively use patter during tricks.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spectator
  • Tricks to perform
  • Preplanned order of tricks
  1. Step 1

Take some sort of an acting/improv/public speaking class or read tutorials on the subject. These will teach the basics of patter.

  2. Step 2

Before performing, make a list of the tricks you plan to perform.

  3. Step 3

Know all of the steps needed to complete each trick.

  4. Step 4

Understand that your spectator is what will make the trick. You need to keep them interested.

  5. Step 5

Be natural! Imagine how you would like a magician to speak to you.

  6. Step 6

Be sure to explain everything very carefully. The worst spectator is a confused spectator.

  7. Step 7

Never be condescending. Even if you are acting in a character, do not treat your spectators like dirt with your patter. Always be very respectful with your patter.
