The obliques are part of the muscles that make up the abdomen. They are located on each side of your stomach. Having toned oblique muscles helps the waistline appear trim and tapered. There are several types of equipment that can be bought to help work the obliques. Follow the tips below before making a purchase.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your goals. Certain pieces of equipment help you work the obliques and build muscle. Other types of equipment work better if your goal is to tone and lose weight. Review the type of exercises that can be performed on the equipment and be sure it meets your goals.

  2. Step 2

Keep in mind the amount of space you have and how big the equipment is. If a piece of exercise equipment is too heavy and not convenient to move to your workout area you may not use it. Buy oblique workout equipment that is light and easy to store.

  3. Step 3

Pick equipment that is versatile. Select a piece of equipment in which it's possible to do several types of oblique exercises. One good choice is a medicine ball. Side bends, side twists and other exercises can be performed.

  4. Step 4

Select a piece of equipment that allows stretching the obliques. Consider an exercise ball. Both toning and stretching can be done. Side crunches that work the obliques are made more intense if performed on an exercise ball.

  5. Step 5

Get the right size. Balls come in different diameters. Select a diameter that will allow your hips and knees parallel to the ground when sitting on the ball.

  6. Step 6

Add weight. Consider selecting a set of dumbbells. They can be used to do side bends. Keep in mind you want a dumbbell that is heavy enough to provide a challenge but will not cause injury. To train oblique muscles most people will need a dumbbell between five and ten pounds.

  7. Step 7

Decide if portability is important to you. If you travel often you may want to select equipment which is easy to take along. Consider exercise bands which can easily be packed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider any injuries or weak areas of your body. For example someone who is prone to neck pain will want to purchase equipment which supports the neck muscles while working the obliques.
  • Be aware of false claims. Manufactures of oblique exercise equipment may guarantee weight loss or results. Individual results vary depending on several factors. It is impossible to guarantee results.
