Things You'll Need:
- One ball of yarn
- Knitting needles
-
Step 1
Choose a smooth yarn to show off the open honeycomb design. Double-knit (DK) or sport weight is the easiest to knit for this pattern.
-
Step 2
Use a needle at least two sizes larger than noted on the ball band. Size 10 or 11 is comfortable to work with. Bamboo needles are a good choice if this is your first lace project as they're less slippery than metal and plastic.
-
Step 3
Pick a stretchy cast-on method like long-tail or cable. Cast on 25 stitches for your swatch. The open honeycomb pattern works over an odd number of stitches and covers four rows.
-
Step 4
Purl all stitches for the first, second and fourth rows. Keep the tension even by not tugging at the yarn after every stitch.
-
Step 5
See the next section for instructions on knitting the pattern row.
-
Step 1
Knit the first stitch of the third row. For the rest of the row, you repeat a pattern of a yarn-over (see Step 2) and an SSK (slip-slip-knit) stitch (see Step 3.)
-
Step 2
Bring the yarn in front of the needle as if you'll purl a stitch. Drape it over the right needle and pinch the yarn with your thumb and forefinger before making the next stitch.
-
Step 3
Insert the right needle into a stitch as if you'll knit it and slip it off the left needle onto the right. Do the same with the second stitch. Insert the left needle into the front of these two slipped stitches and knit them. You'll find a video demonstration of the SSK stitch on the Knitting Help website.
-
Step 4
Finish the four-row pattern repeat by purling the fourth row. Continue knitting the open honeycomb pattern for another 20 rows and bind off loosely.
