Write a Belated Thank You Note

Etiquette demands that when a gift is received, one writes a note to thank the giver. Everyone understands that saying “Thanks” is important. Most everyone experiences a time when we get busy, forget or just don’t get around to sending a note to say “Thanks.” Take the time to say “Thank You!” The old adage, better late than never, applies to this situation!

From Quick Guide: Giving Thanks with a Note
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Name and address of gift giver
  • Plain note card or note paper
  • Ink pen
  1. Step 1

Understand that most people expect some sort of a Thank You note. Even though many people will not address the lack of a thank you directly with you; they will have noticed that you did not take the effort to write a simple note.

  2. Step 2

Don’t procrastinate any more. Decide that it is time to write those notes of appreciation. Schedule a time to sit down and write. The actual time you spend working on a thank you note is minimal. Even if you have a whole list of Thank You notes for a wedding or birthday; setting aside a few minutes a day will allow you to get the task finished efficiently.

  3. Step 3

Purchase either some pretty note paper or a box of blank Thank You cards. These can be purchased inexpensively at a discount store. Make sure you have pens, as well.

  4. Step 4

Gather your list of gifts and givers. If you don’t have a list of who gave you what gift, make one to the best of your memory.

  5. Step 5

At the time you have scheduled, gather your supplies. This should include the list mentioned above, pens, stamps, Thank You notes and the addresses of the individuals to whom you will be writing.

  6. Step 6

Handwrite a brief note to each person. This should include mention of the gift, your appreciation, as well as a brief apology for being slow in getting out the note.

  7. Step 7

Address the envelope. If you absolutely must, you may use computer printed labels. Hand written addresses look more personal, but most people would rather get a note with a printed label than no note at all.

  8. Step 8

Attach the stamp and go directly to the post office to mail the notes. Many people are guilty of writing a note and waiting weeks to mail it. If you take the effort to write a note, make sure the person receives it.
