March in a Band

These steps will help you before you march with the rest of the band.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Band or tennis shoes
  • Your instrument and music
  1. Step 1

Be sure you have good tennis shoes for practice, unless you need to break-in your band shoes. You will probably practice in a large parking lot or field with the rest of the band.

  2. Step 2

Begin standing, feet together. Bring your right foot up the side of your left lower leg, with your toes pointed to the ground. The height of your foot depends on it’s length.

  3. Step 3

Bring your right foot firmly down to the ground next to your left foot, marching in place. Then, bring your left foot up the side of your right lower leg, with your toes pointed to the ground.

  4. Step 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 several times in place. Remember, you are marching, “snap” your legs and feet movements. Think of yourself as a nutcracker, sharp, straight, in line.

  5. Step 5

Utilize the marching technique and move in different directions, using the same steps in 2 and 3.

  6. Step 6

Bring in your instrument. Play your instrument and march in place first, then practice moving and playing. Move in all directions; forwards, backwards and sideways.

  7. Step 7

Practicing these moves will get you ready for marching with the band. Have fun, play well and march on.
