Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Realistic Expectations
- Unconditional Love
- Scheduled Family Time
How to Help a Teen Manage Stress
Step1
Set realistic expectations for your teen. This can be difficult since we all want our children to become all they can be. The trick is finding a balance.
Step2
Schedule time to connect with your teen. Make these non-negotiable. If the family has dinner together twice a week make it a requirement that each member attend.
Step3
Discourage a unhealthy competitiveness in your teen. Teens sometimes do things just to compete with others. Make certain the activities your teen is involved in is because it is something that interests him.
Step4
Refrain from over-scheduling activities to fill your teen's down time. We all need a little down time now and then just to let our mind and body catch up.
Step5
Express your love for your teen. Teens may act as if they are too old to appreciate such acts from parents but they need a constant reinforcement from their home front.

on 1/8/2008 Thanks for the article. I would have to add coping skills. This is one of the most importaint things you can teach them. If you teach them to abide by your rules and values that is fine but giving them the coping skills to deal with other people who don't helps lessen impulse decisions or worse yet outbursts and emotional rollercoasters.
