How to Wear a Peasant Skirt

How to Wear a Peasant Skirt thumbnail
Peasant skirts are stylish and comfortable.

The peasant skirt is a classic bohemian-inspired fashion. Always comfortable, it pops up in stores every few seasons. If your style is a little bit hippie, you're probably very familiar with peasant skirts, but even if it isn't, you can still incorporate them into your look. They're especially great in hot weather, as they keep your legs cool without showing too much. Look to the late 1960s for inspiration, or do a totally modern take on this classic boho skirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a fitted top to balance the flowy skirt. This keeps your look modern and bohemian but not too hippie-ish. Wear a simple tank top in a complementary color to keep it super-casual, or a luxurious silk top for evening. Bare a little more on top, in a daring a one-shoulder top or backless shirt.

    • 2

Accessorize. Accentuate your shape with a belt around your waist. Echo the form of the long skirt with long, dangly necklaces -- wear several and be fashion-forward. Alternatively, try some wooden bangles and long earrings. Avoid piling on too much jewelry, or you'll look like you've dressed up as a fortune-teller.

    • 3

Wear a pair of nice leather sandals or ballet flats with an ankle-length peasant skirt. Avoid flip-flops, because they can look sloppy. With a just-below-the-knee skirt, wedged heels or espadrilles look great, as do cowboy boots.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read the washing instructions on your skirt. Most peasant skirts need to be hand-washed separately so they don't run.

  • Look in the bathing suit section of department and off-price stores. You can often find inexpensive and unusual peasant skirts mixed in with the beach cover ups.

  • Avoid a peasant skirt that hits you on the widest spot of your calf or it can make your legs look thicker than they are.
