While there are many factors in a great golf swing, how you hold a golf club is one of the most important parts of the game. Minimal changes in the position of your hands and fingers can significantly alter the flight of your ball.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Golf club
  1. Step 1

Position the head of your club so that it squarely faces the target.

  2. Step 2

Hold the club handle in the left hand if you are right-handed. The club should lie across the bottom of your fingers, just above the palm. The V formed by your thumb and forefinger should point toward your right shoulder. Reverse Steps 2 through 5 if you're left-handed.

  3. Step 3

Place your right hand on the club so it lies diagonally across your ring, middle and index fingers, from nearest the palm on the ring finger to the tip of the index finger.

  4. Step 4

Cover the thumb of your left hand with the thumb of your right hand.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the V on your right hand is parallel to the V on your left hand.

  6. Step 6

Lower the club into place for the swing, keeping it in your fingers with just enough pressure to hold the club. Maintain light pressure on the grip throughout the golf swing.

  7. Step 7

Don't hold the club in the palms of your hands or you will lose power and control. Your fingers are far more sensitive than your palm, so let them guide your shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get in the habit of properly holding your golf club before you place the club head on the ground. Once you put the club head on the ground, the tendency is to focus solely on the ball.
  • Holding the golf club always feels awkward at first but will soon come naturally with practice.
