How to Visit the African-American Civil War Memorial and Museum

The African-American Civil War Memorial located in Washington, DC, was created in January 1999 to recognize the contributions of African-American soldiers during the Civil War. A museum, which is located only two blocks from the monument, holds an extensive collection of items that tell about the roles African Americans played in the war.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule a tour if you will be visiting the monument and museum with more than 5 people. The museum will provide a lecture and question-and-answer session for your group, followed by a tour of the monument. If your group is interested, you can also view the documentary "Fight for Freedom," which tells the story of African-American soldiers in the armed forces.

    • 2

View documents, photographs and artifacts that chronicle the journey of African-American soldiers as they traversed both the war and their tenuous positions in society.

    • 3

Become a member of the African-American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation and help keep the monument and museum free to the public. You'll receive various benefits, such as discounts on merchandise in the museum store.

    • 4

Tour the U Street/Shaw neighborhood where the museum is located. This area has been a haven for black culture for decades and also served as a sanctuary for free slaves during the Civil War.

Check the African-American Civil War Memorial and Museum's website often to find out what events are planned throughout the year (see Resources below).

    • 6
