How to Fix Internet Connectivity Issues

Today we live in a society where being connected through high speed broadband connections is a must in order to maintain communications and transfer information to and from various parties of interest. When this connection is suddenly interrupted, not only is time lost but money is potentially lost as well, not to mention the frustration it may cause. In the event of a sudden drop in internet connectivity and its failure to automatically re-establish itself, here are a few steps to determine if the cause of your problem is due to hardware.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • your computer
  • a phone number for your internet service provider
  • patience

Step1
Ensure that your computer and modem are receiving power. If your area has recently suffered a power outage, it is possible that this may be disrupting the connection. You may attempt to contact your electrical company to ask if there are any problems in the area, or call your internet service provider to ask if their power has been disrupted.
Step2
Examine your Ethernet cord. This cord is about a quarter-inch in diameter and should be plugged into the back of your computer much like a large phone cord. Check to see if this cord is inserted securely into its proper slot in the back of your computer. Next, check to see if the other end of this cord is securely plugged into your modem. If either end is loose, remove the cord completely, and reinsert it firmly into the appropriate slot. Cords may become loose from accidental tugging or pulling, and may be the cause of some problems.
Step3
Make sure all cords are plugged into your modem correctly. If you have one, refer to your user's guide, if necessary, to double check proper cord placement. If your modem is receiving power, the LED colored lights on its front should be lit or flashing, which should indicate that it is at least receiving a signal from your internet service provider.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your problem is not caused by hardware, your issue may be software based. The solutions for software based problems depend upon operating system and what, if any, third-party program you use to establish an internet connection.
