How to Make a Fleece Hat

Make fleece hats for yourself or as gifts.

Fleece is a fabric that keeps you very warm in the winter. Making a fleece hat for you or a loved one takes a little time. After a trip to your local fabric store, make a fleece hat at home using a sewing machine or sewing by hand.

Things You'll Need

• 1/2 yard fleece fabric
• 1 yard decorative cord
• Tape measure
• Needle and thread
• Scissors
• Button or other decorative piece
• Chalk or fabric marker

Instructions

1. Measure your head by wrapping the fabric around your (or the recipiant's) head, making a small mark on the fabric so you know how big to make your hat.

2. Cut a 16-inch-long piece of the fleece fabric, by the width of your measurement plus two inches (so if your measurement is 10 inches, make it 12) .

3. Fold your fabric in half down the center, so the 16-inch edges match up.

4. Turn the material inside out, sew a 1/2-inch-wide seam along the edge, stopping 5 inches from the bottom.

5. Flip the hat right-side out and sew a seam along the remaining 5 inches of fabric.

6. Fold the bottom of the hat up two times; this hides the bottom part of the seam. Sew a button or other decorative piece on the fold, going through all three layers of fabric to keep it from unraveling.

7. Bunch up the top 3 inches of fabric and tie a cord around it.

Tips & Warnings

• Use complementary cord to your fabric.

• Sew more than one button or other decorative piece on the hat to make it more creative.
