How to Build a Wooden Picnic Table

Building a picnic table could be a rewarding experience. You will probably save a few dollars compared to buying a commercial picnic table. Also, you gain a greater appreciation for woodworking after completing this task. Each and every time you use the picnic table, you'll be reminded of the fun and effort it took to make such a great end result.

  1. Step 1

    Find a design of a wooden picnic table. This could be found in a woodworking magazine or book. Also, you may want to look around online for woodworking designs.

  2. Step 2

    Identify your woodworking workshop. In most places, the garage or the basement will be the main place to do your woodworking. Have a power supply and adequate lighting to complete the project, whichever one you choose.

  3. Step 3

    Buy your lumber for the woodworking project. The required cuts will be laid out in the design. Since picnic tables will be kept outdoors, you will need to buy pressure-treated wood. You should be able to find all of the wood at a local lumber yard or a commercial home improvement store.

  4. Step 4

    Purchase the necessary woodworking tools to complete the project. You will find several power tools that are affordable at your local home improvement store. Perform the work using hand tools instead of power tools if you prefer.

  5. Step 5

    Follow the steps laid out in your design of the picnic table. Be extremely careful if you are using any power tools. Always read the entire manual before operating a new power tool.

  6. Step 6

    Sand your final project extremely well before you paint it. You want to the wood to become extremely smooth so that no one gets a splinter on your table.

  7. Step 7

    Paint your picnic table. Always lay down an a primer before applying coats of paint. This will provide a better foundation so that your paint will hold its color for longer.
