How to Climb a Rope
There is nothing like that day in gym class when the teacher pulls out the rope and expects you to climb it. It can be a tad frightening to think of yourself dangling in the air, clutching a few pieces of twine strung together as the whole class gazes at you. But fear not, help has arrived. Here's how to climb a rope.

1
Grasp the rope above your head with both hands. Make sure your dominant hand is above the other hand as this will be the lead hand that "pulls" you up.
-
2
Yank down on the rope as you simultaneously jump up and wrap your legs around the rope. This sounds a bit complex, but your body will naturally combine these actions, as your body's reflex is to make sure you don't fall.

3
Be sure you have a good anchor. Before you begin to ascend on the rope, make sure your feet have pinched the rope forming a base or anchor for yourself. Your test should be that you should be able to loosen your grip on the rope with your hands and still feel secure. (Don't perform this test at the top of the rope, just while you are inches off of the ground).
-
4
Reach your hands higher and grasp the rope. There is no exact measurement on how much you should reach higher, just enough so that you feel comfortable and can get a strong grip. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Do not feel like you need to climb the entire rope in one pull.
-
5
Pull yourself higher as you simultaneously release your feet from its anchored grip and bend your knees. At this point you will be in a bent position, re-secure your legs in the same pinched anchor grip.
-
6
Repeat these movements until you ascend to the top of the rope.
-
7
Release yourself and slide slowly down the rope. Now that you know how to climb the rope in gym class, getting down would certainly be nice. Allow the grip of your legs to loosen ever so slightly. Also adjust the pressure on your hands as well. You should begin to slide down. Remember to do this slowly, because if you let go all at once, you'll have a rude awakening as you hit the mat below.

Tips & Warnings
Place some knots in the rope every two feet. This will allow the climber to have a better anchor with their feet.
Slide slowly down the rope. If you travel too fast, you could be the unfortunate recipient of rope burn and get nasty red rashes and burns on your hands and legs.
Always be sure that there is someone there supervising when you climb a rope.
Keep a first aid kit and phone close by in case of emergency.
Always use a thick mat underneath the rope to protect in case of a fall.
